Specialty License Plate Instructions

If your tags have expired or you are renewing your tags and live in Shelby County:

  • Visit a City of Memphis Motor Vehicle Inspection station to have your car inspected:

590 Washington Avenue (West of Danny Thomas)
855 North White Station (near Summer Avenue)
1720 R.K.S. Commercial Cove (just off of Lamar)

o    Tip: Stations are most crowded at the end of the month between 10 am and 2 pm. View webcams of each station, to view click here, to avoid longer lines and wait times.

  •   Once your car has passed inspection, take your renewal form that you received in the mail and your inspection form to the nearest Shelby County Clerk's office.

  •  The entire amount of the registration plus specialty/personalized fees can be paid at the County Clerk's office,. When you arrive, present your forms to the County Clerk representative and request a specialty license plate. License plates that support the Tennessee Arts Commission are the three arts plates and collegiate plates. Each plate costs $35 and personalization costs $70. This fee is not included in the cost to renew your tags. To find out the base cost of renewing your car tags, click here.

If your tags are current but you would like to obtain a specialty license plate: 

File an Application for Tennessee Personalized License Plate and forwarding the application along with the fee to the Vehicle Services Section, Taxpayer and Vehicle Services Division, 44 Vantage Way, Suite 160, Nashville, TN 37243-8050.  To view and print an application, click here.
